Welcome to St. Joseph`s Catholic School....where Christ is the Principle.
St. Joseph Catholic School opened its doors in 1949. The Precious Blood Sisters were our first teachers, ministering 23 years. In 1971, the Sisters of the Congregation of the Humility of Mary began their ministry to students which continued for the next 18 years. Today we are extremely proud of our highly dedicated, spiritual, and talented teaching staff.
Our educational program includes Kindergarten through Eighth, in addition to an exceptional preschool program for three and four year olds. We also offer an alternative to Kindergarten within the preschool program; Developmental Kindergarten. This program is designed for those students who may miss the September 15th cut off date for Kindergarten enrollment, or for those families who simply elect to wait another year.
Our school offers numerous educational opportunities, some which are unique to St. Joseph`s. Opportunities include:
*New school-wide security system with buzzed only camera monitored entry
*Newly renovated Technology lab with flat screen computers and work stations to accommodate up to 30 students plus a mobile laptop lab for use in classrooms (2006)
*All classrooms host state of the art "SMART Boards"

Our mission, as well as that of the Diocese of Des Moines Schools, is to provide a meaningful educational experience for our children and adolescents, in an environment integrated with Gospel values which nurture faith, community, prayer and service. We believe that we provide a warm and caring environment for students and that they are challenged to learn the essential curriculum regardless of learning rate or style. We teach the value of human dignity and the concepts of peace and justice, which therefore enable our students to become involved participants in our global society.

Meet our Principal
 Mrs. Phyllis Konchar, principal
Mrs. Phyllis Konchar earned her elementary education degree from Iowa State University and began her career in education in 1980 as a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher at Earnest Horn School in Iowa City. Following a move to Des Moines with her husband, she taught 8th grade at St. Joseph School until the birth of their son, Sam. After eight years at home, the birth of twins Luke and Alexandra, and earning a Master’s degree from Drake University in School Administration, she returned to the teaching world as an 8th grade teacher at Sacred Heart School in West Des Moines. In 1999, after two short years, Mrs. Konchar returned to St. Joseph School as the school principal. She currently holds a master’s degree in School Administration and returned to Drake University in the spring to complete her Specialist’s Degree. Mrs. Konchar was recognized by Superintendent Dr. Gubbels and Bishop Pates on January 28, 2009 at the Annual Diocesan wide All School Mass for excellence in meeting the educational needs of our children for fifteen years in Catholic Education. Dr. and Mrs. Konchar have been members of St. Joseph’s parish since 1985. All three of their children graduated from St. Joseph School and have, or will, graduate from Dowling Catholic High School. We thank and applaud Mrs. Konchar for her consistent dedication to excellence in Catholic education and the betterment of St. Joseph School.
