2005 St. Joseph "Distinguished Alumni"

The 2005 St. Joseph "Distinguished Alumni" award honoree was Dodie (Engel) Bauman (above right, with Mrs. Konchar), of the class of 1968. At the award ceremony, Dodie gave the following speech to our students:

I am honored to accept this year’s Distinguished Alumni award, and I do so on behalf of all past and future alumni of St. Joseph’s School, each of whom is distinguished in his or her unique way.

As we begin Catholic Education Week, and as a product of 12 years’ of Catholic Education, I have been asked to say a few words about what Catholic education means to me.

First, I must thank the Sisters of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, who taught at St. Joseph’s while I was a student. They instilled in me the love of the rich tradition of the sacred music of the Church.

In second grade, Sr. Benedict introduced me to the wonder and mystery of Gregorian Chant as a member of her "neophyte" choir. A few years later, in May 1968, Sr. Doris finally caved to my incessant pleadings to play the organ. She reluctantly agreed, allowing me to play under the tutelage of Mary Eaton, who was parish organist at that time. I am privileged to have served you, the parish of St. Joseph’s, as organist for these nearly 37 years.

To paraphrase the great 20th century poet and philosopher, Kahlil Gibran – a teacher cannot reveal anything that does not already lie half-asleep within the dawning of one’s own knowledge. And a wise person will not simply share his own wisdom with his student, but rather will lead the student to the threshold of her own mind.

That’s what Catholic education means to me … the unveiling of God-given talents and abilities that lie deep within each of us, and the opportunity to be led to the very brink of our intellects.

  • Catholic education taught me loyalty, faithfulness, dedication, curiosity, commitment, spirituality, service, the dignity of human life, trustworthiness, respect, integrity and humility.
  • Catholic education provides the very foundation upon which all learning can be achieved – that through God, ALL things are possible.
  • Catholic education develops character, instills discipline, creates desire for life-long learning and introspection, and sets our hearts on the greater gifts…to do what Jesus would do, to be of service to one another and to constantly strive for our eternal reward.

In closing, to parody a very popular societal message….

When considering Catholic education:

Book fees - $45

Uniforms - $160

Tuition - $1800 and up

Catholic Education – Priceless!
