Grade News
November
Edition 2009
Thank you again for
your support and communication.
It was
great being able to meet with you all at conferences.
Science
Science is moving
along.
We have wrapped up our
chapter on
plants and we are progressing into understanding animals a little
further. Most
recently we have identified what exactly qualifies
a mammal as a mammal and the necessities for animal life. In
the coming month the students will explore
through investigations different life forms and their lifestyles.
Social Studies
There
has been a lot of progress in understanding maps and the students have
had fun
with this.
Currently we are looking at
the three different types of communities (rural, suburban, and urban). As
we move along we are discovering these
types of communities exist in many places including here in Iowa.
Math
There
has been tremendous progress with our addition facts and the daily
minute
tests.
We have completed our unit on
rounding and place value and moved onto working with money. It
is safe to say they are all very
comfortable and excited using money. We
will be wrapping up the money unit soon and perfecting our skills on
telling
time.
It is important as a 3rd
grader to obtain and hone the ability to read an analog clock. The
students are all very enthusiastic with
math and I have a feeling they will be comfortable with telling time
quickly.
Reading
Reading groups are coming along very well.
We have been reading
non-fiction books.
There has been a good
response to these book and the students have
realized non-fiction books can be just as interesting and entertaining
as
fiction books.
While in reading group
the students will be challenged to become involved readers. This
will entail them to read with expression
and acknowledge punctuation.
We have also delved into the
Houghton Mifflin Reading
texts.
Our first theme is adventure
and
we have finished up reading a story about a boy who rescued his dog on
a
cliff.
This story has emphasized
predicting and inferring while reading.
This adventure is starting to
wrap up and we will be exploring further
into the text and discovering more reading techniques.
Final Bit
Your support at home
has been reflecting in a positive light in the classroom. It
is appreciated!
Keep encouraging your child
to strive for
their personal best.
They are all amazing
and bring a true sense enthusiasm for learning each day.
