5th and 7th MATH
5th grade has completed work on place values as well as whole number and decimal addition and subtraction. We will be moving into multiplication and long division. 7th grade has completed work on decimals, integers, order of operations, and solving for an unknown within an equation. We will be moving into exponents, factors and fractions.
7th and 8th READING
Animal Farm was completed by the 8th grade. This novel by George Orwell focuses on political structures and mirrors the rise of Communism in Russia. The students saw the need of an informed citizenry to maintain a democracy and have a realization of how lucky we are to have our group of Founding Fathers. We have started The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The students are enjoying learning more about the character they met in 7th grade.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer will soon be completed by the 7th grade. This has been an exciting book for the 7th grade as they are exposed to a life without T.V., cars, or video games. Tom’s adventures have brought humor into the room and the strong vocabulary of the book has been a big benefit. After Tom Sawyer is complete we will be reading a book on the Trojan War. This book will give the students a strong background for reading they will likely encounter in high school.
7th and 8th S.S.
American History is the focus of the 8th grade this year. We will be well into the Revolutionary War soon. 7th grade is focused on geography and the western hemisphere this year. We have completed general geographical concepts and skills and have moved to cultural and economic discussions. By December we hope to be focused on America and Canada.
